Below, learn more about the Mavic 4 Pro from a professional RI drone videographer, and learn how you can be the first to get the drone in the US.
What’s new on the DJI Mavic Pro?
The Mavic 4 offers improvements on range, speed, camera quality, stabilization, and more quality-of-life features tailor-made for professional creators. As drone videographers, the features that excite us the most include the following.Camera Upgrades
The Mavic 4’s main camera is an HDR Hasselblad 100mp model that can record in 6k resolution at up to 60 frames per second (fps.) Slow motion mode offers 4k and 120 fps. In raw specs, it’s one the most powerful drone cameras ever made: The quality, clarity, and smoothness of footage is now unmatched in the drone world. The secondary cameras have upgrades, too. For example, the Mavic 3’s secondary cameras recorded in different color profiles. But on the Mavic 4, all the cameras support the same color profiles, including standard, D-Log, D-Log M, and HLG. This makes it easier to color grade footage from different cameras.
Infiniti gimbal rotation
One of our favorite new upgrades is the first-of-its-kind “Infiniti” gimbal. The gimbal can rotate a full 360 degrees and 70 degrees upward. You can maneuver the camera with more freedom than ever before and set up cinematic Dutch angles with the push of a button. What is the range of DJI Mavic 4 Pro?
The Mavic 4 has a whopping 20 mile flight range, more than double that of its predecessor. For reference, the entire state of Rhode Island is only 37 miles wide. In other words, it’s theoretically possible to fly a Mavic 4 across more than half the state while standing at a single point. As Rhode Island drone photographers, you can understand why we find this upgrade particularly exciting.
How fast is the DJI Mavic 4 Pro?
The Mavic 4 has improvements in speed, too. It can fly up to 60 mph in optimal conditions. That’s around 13 mph faster than the last generation. In practice, this enhanced speed allows you to track fast-moving subjects or capture action sequences more smoothly. The ability to change angles faster gives you more cinematic freedom to experiment.
New RC pro remote
Another excellent feature is the DJI Mavic 4 Pro’s completely redesigned controller. The RC Pro 2 controller has a mini LED screen attached above the joysticks on a swivel mount. The display even syncs directly with the gimbal — rotating the screen means the drone camera will rotate too, giving you more direct camera control. The remote’s battery lasts up to four hours, allowing you to fly longer without a recharge.
Mavic 4 Downsides
As far as cons go, the drone currently doesn’t support ProRes recording. With the Creator Combo, you can record professional 4:2:2 All-I encoding, delivering maximum flexibility and cinematic color grading potential. It also includes 512GB internal storage to save all your high-resolution photos and video footage. There’s another major drawback to the Mavic 4 for American drone pilots: The drone isn’t officially on the market in the United States.
What’s the DJI Mavic 4 Pro release date?
Currently, the Mavic 4 Pro isn’t available in the US. DJI has stated that they have no plans to officially launch the drone in US markets. The decision comes on the heels of tariffs and pending litigation that would ban new Chinese-made drones in the US.That said, you’re not necessarily out of luck if you want to buy the drone in the United States.
How do you get DJI Mavic 4 Pro in the USA?
While DJI has publicly said the drones aren’t coming to the US, some official DJI storefronts have offered the drone, and it’s possible to import a Mavic 4 to the US, although it’s not without risks.Preorder from a retailer
While DJI’s official New York store DJI Fifth Avenue sold the drone online at one point, it’s currently out of stock. The store lets you sign up for restock notifications, so you can be the first to snatch up your Mavic 4 if and when it’s back in stock.Other United States retailers that offer the Mavic 4 Pro on preorder include, Adorama, Moment, and B&H.
Buy in a foreign country
If you’re up for a road trip, you can buy the drone in person from a retailer in Canada or Mexico and bring it across the border. The drone will work in the United States, even if you bought it in another country. However, you’ll need to declare the drone at customs on your return trip, where you might face import duties or delays. Additionally, DJI doesn’t cover warranties in the US on drones purchased abroad.
Have someone mail it to you
If you can’t drive to Canada or Mexico to buy the drone in person, you could always ask an international friend to ship it to you. Again, the drone should still work as usual, but it will still need to go through customs, where it may be delayed or even confiscated, and you automatically void the warranty. What is the DJI Mavic 4 Pro Price?
Since the drone isn’t “officially” out in the US, there isn’t any single clear price tag. However, DJI Fifth Avenue offered the Mavic 4 at a base price of $2,699, with a “fly more” package featuring extra batteries and propellers for $3,549.While it may seem like a steep price, we think the upgrades are well worth the cost and Mavic 4 will be more widely available for American drone pilots soon.
